Freshwater aquarium algae, plants and water. These items are high in nitrogen.
Garden debris. Corn stalks, dried plants and dried vines can all be added to the compost heap. Plant trimmings can also be added.
Hay and straw. Use seedless hay for best results. You don't want a crop of hay sprouting up in your garden. Straw decomposes slowly and contains a lot of nitrogen.
Leaves. Leaves are full of nutrients and carbon. You can bag them up and set them aside so you have enough leaves to last you through the following summer.
