 Freshwater aquarium algae, plants and water. These items are high in nitrogen.

 Garden debris. Corn stalks, dried plants and dried vines can all be added to the compost heap. Plant trimmings can also be added.

 Hay and straw. Use seedless hay for best results. You don't want a crop of hay sprouting up in your garden. Straw decomposes slowly and contains a lot of nitrogen.

 Leaves. Leaves are full of nutrients and carbon. You can bag them up and set them aside so you have enough leaves to last you through the following summer.
